Sometimes we forget how awesome Edmonton is!!!  Our good friend and colleague Shafraaz Kaba has been on an adventure with his family for the past few years.  And we are not talking about a "stay-cation" or a relaxing trip to the Rockies.

The Kaba family has tirelessly and diligently been "Chasing Net-Zero" throughout the design and construction of their home and have been sharing their stories and discoveries along the way in person and on their blog chasingnetzero.blogspot.com .  We were happy to help where we could during the interior work, and always had a great time meeting the vast network of people Shafraaz had called on for some good ole' skill sharing and building.

The result has been an amazing home, dreamt up by a family, executed by an amazing team, and built by a community.

The highlight for us was when David Suzuki and his daughter Sarika spent the day at the Kaba house, learning all about the unique aspects of the homes systems, construction and finishes, while filming for their new show "the Suzuki Diaries".  They even donned safety glasses and work gloves, and with a nail gun in hand, helped finish off the second floor patio!! Amazing!

The Episode will air on CBC this week so be sure to check out the Suzuki Diaries website to see when it airs in your region, or watch it online!

Yegwood throwing a launch party Dec. 17 at DaCapo Cafe for their new line of environmentally-friendly sunglasses

When Edmonton entrepreneur Joey Hundert started his latest venture, he knew Yegwood (eco-friendly Wayfarer style shades) was a great idea, but he also knew he needed more than an event to spread the word.

“The frames are all-natural woods, typically cut from one solid block of wood. We choose wood because it tells such a great story, whether it’s a recycled century-old abandoned bar, old maritime ships, or beetle-kill from B.C. This is visible in the constant grain patterns on our glasses, where the rings and sometimes even knots can be distinguished,” Hundert explains.

While the concept is cool, it’s a mouthful to sell. So Hundert and his team got creative.

Relying on the old adage of a picture being worth a thousand words, the team decided to blend an event with a photo contest in order to test the market.

“We sponsored Sustainival, the eco-friendly carnival that took place at the Fringe Festival and that was our first public outing,” says Hundert. “People truly freaked out over our stuff. We held a photo contest at the Fringe and it sparked a huge wave of viral interest in our online story and story.”

In fact, over 30,000 people viewed the contest website during the 10 day festival.

The contest winner garnered over 500 votes alone.

That was enough evidence to get Hundert to organize a stand-alone event for the new line on Dec. 17 at DaCapo Cafe (8739 109 St.).

“We’re throwing a launch party to celebrate the new line of Yegwood sunglasses.”

In addition to being entertained by one of Edmonton’s most legendary DJ’s (Remo de Janeiro), Yegwood is hosting another photo contest where contestants sport one of the new pairs of shades, style it up, and get their photo snapped in a photo booth by a local pro.

The pics are then uploaded to Facebook and yegwood.com where people will vote for their favourite glam shot.

The winner walks away with a custom pair of wood frames worth over $400 and some cool art from Latitude 53. For more information, visit yegwood.com

Wed, 09 Nov 2011 08:22:54 -0800 Germany says no to nuclear and yes to renewables! http://ecoammo.posterous.com/germany-says-no-to-nuclear-and-yes-to-renewab http://ecoammo.posterous.com/germany-says-no-to-nuclear-and-yes-to-renewab Guten Morgen meine freund!

Back in May of this year Germany announced they are phasing out nuclear power (which is amazing) but now they have announced how they plan on doing this - and there answer is..... renewable energy!

They are planning on spending over 130 billion in the next five years on renewable energy. They want to generate 35% of their energy needs from renewables by 2020 and by 2050 a whopping 80%!! There is one 'keener' state which projects it will produce 100% of it's energy needs from renewable energy by 2017!! The entire country currently sits at 20% which has already created thousands of jobs and new industries.

There are still issues to be sorted out like storage and transmission - however with the entire country focusing on growing this industry and $274.6 billion available for joint funding initiatives in energy storage research over the next three years, I'm willing to bet the solutions for our storage issues come from Germany too!

Fri, 28 Oct 2011 12:21:20 -0700 Top 40 Under 40! http://ecoammo.posterous.com/top-40-under-40 http://ecoammo.posterous.com/top-40-under-40

We are so proud of our man Jeff, he was selected this year as one of Avenue’s 2011 Top 40 Under 40.  Avenue defines this diverse group as having one similar core value, "they help to improve the quality of life in Edmonton and put this city on the map."

Jeff is a keystone of our company, and a selfless supporter of our team.  He is Brandy's significant other, and is known to throw a mean game of darts.

Re-posted from the avenue magazine website

Jeff Johnston

WHY HE’S TOP 40: He finds solutions to every problem, whether it’s creating a fish maze for a zoologist or making something useful out of scraps of lumber.

KEY TO SUCCESS:  “Design is always a hunt, a search for something, and I get taken away.”

Jeff Johnston, Industrial Designer

When the doctors and professors at the University of Alberta’s biology department want to take their research to prototype, only one goateed, kung fu-loving occasional-beekeeper can help: “Jeff from the shop.”

“I have academics coming to me, asking for anything and everything related to biology,” says Jeff Johnston, fabrication workshop coordinator and U of A industrial design instructor. “And I build it.”

Since 2002, he’s been honoured to build hundreds of apparatuses — or, as he might call them, “solutions” — related to zoology, genetics, paleontology and more. “Problem solving is 30 to 40 per cent of what I do. It’s what keeps me going.”

He’s also an independent industrial designer, one who sold a design for a whimsical picture holder to Umbra, which in turn sold more than a million of his products. And, there’s at least 500 people wearing his geometric wood pendants, a solution to two problems — what to do with wood scraps and how to woo his new girlfriend. Four years later, Brandy Burdeniuk, his partner in life and their business, Offcut Jewelry, still gets complimented for that first design whenever she wears it.

Johnston is also teaching design foundations in the U of A’s design department, where he learned his craft 10 years ago.

Together with associate professor Robert Lederer, Johnston came up with one the department’s most successful ideas in 2008. As one of their final projects, students make architecturally inspired pet abodes, which they auction at the annual Pets in the Park. Proceeds — now in the thousands of dollars — go to the Edmonton Humane Society

It gives back and challenges his students to seek unique ways of using their talents. “Too many talented people are quick to assume that to be a designer you have to leave for a larger city. There is work that needs to be done here, you just have to be creative and look for it in unexpected places.”

I love love love finding infographics that show the potential for our population and economies to grow, create massive amounts of jobs, while saving trillions of $ and having an end goal of phasing out the production of energy from oil, coal and nuclear :) YAY!

Looks like we have some work to do. I would say more jobs would be created over the long term from this transition, then from the construction of a pipe line to Texas. Just saying :)

Thu, 01 Sep 2011 12:47:00 -0700 10,000 Buildings Certified! http://ecoammo.posterous.com/10000-buildings-certified http://ecoammo.posterous.com/10000-buildings-certified

Live_oak

The Live Oak Family Resource Center in Santa Cruz, CA, courtesy of Google Street Views

Today the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) announced a milestone!  They have officially certified the 10,000th LEED commercial project!  Whoot whoot!

I don’t get the chance to quote Bruce Lee very often, so I’ll keep it short.

In the immortal words of Bruce Lee,“I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times.”

LEED is the one kick, and now it has not only been practiced but implemented 10,000 times!

10,000 buildings certified is a huge accomplishment, not only for the USGBC, but for all the project teams and building owners that made the commitment to this market changer.

It is also a great thing for the occupants out there enjoying these buildings!  The 10,000th certified building was The Live Oak Family Resource Center in Santa Cruz, Calif., which was awarded LEED Platinum today.  The local paper, the Santa Cruz Sentinel, did an article about the opening of the building in March of this year.  Writer Jenna Brogan interviewed volunteers and community members that are utilizing the center.  They told stories of their previous building being cramped, inefficient and rundown. Susan Cabrera, president of the board for the Volunteer Center, reminisced about brushing the termite dust off her desk every morning in their old building and Karen Delaney, executive director of the Volunteer Center, has already seen a significant decrease in power costs. “I can’t believe it costs less to be here than in our leaky old trailer,” she laughed.

The Live Oak Family Resource Center is not only a LEED milestone but an embodiment of the USGBC's Vision to create “buildings and communities [that] will regenerate and sustain the health and vitality of all life within a generation.” The center is a place for families to find guidance, information and referrals on childbirth and parenting, health education and services, youth and senior programs, food distribution and other community needs.  All this under a roof that doesn’t leak, but collects water and generates solar power.

“We’ve just scratched the surface of what’s possible in the green building field,” said President, CEO and founding chair of the USGBC Rick Fedrizzi, in their press release today. “In 10 short years, we’ve fundamentally changed how we construct and operate buildings and communities, and during that time LEED has continued to evolve, pushing sustainable building practice forward with each evolution. But there’s much more to do. The market continues to embrace LEED as the leadership standard it was meant to be and our kids deserve the outcomes that green buildings contribute to their future.”

As Canadians we should be proud that 101 of these USGBC projects are actually in Canada!  They were registered and in some cases certified before the different LEED systems were available in Canada from the Canada Green Building Council - 4 of which received the highest certification of Platinum.

To end the way we started, I might as well throw in some more Bruce Lee, “There are no limits. There are plateaus, but you must not stay there, you must go beyond them.”

So lets go beyond 10,000 certifications, and look forward to the day when LEED is integrated into our building code and considered best practices.  We can all dream of that day and work hard towards it.

Jack Layton rides his bike down from Parliament Hill in Ottawa back in 2005. TOM HANSON/CP

Jack Layton was one of my heroes.  IF not for his politics, then for his love of cycling.  His passing was a shock to our office.  We rarely talk politics, but we are proud to be located (and live) in the tiny orange life raft in a sea of blue here in Alberta.

Who can say it better then Jack himself, he composed the following letter only days before his death, and we would like to repost it here (we got it from the Globe & Mail).  Give it a read, even if the NDP isn't your party.  There is something we can all learn from him.

The full text of his letter follows:

- - -

August 20, 2011

Toronto, Ontario

Dear Friends,

Tens of thousands of Canadians have written to me in recent weeks to wish me well. I want to thank each and every one of you for your thoughtful, inspiring and often beautiful notes, cards and gifts. Your spirit and love have lit up my home, my spirit, and my determination.

Unfortunately my treatment has not worked out as I hoped. So I am giving this letter to my partner Olivia to share with you in the circumstance in which I cannot continue.

I recommend that Hull-Aylmer MP Nycole Turmel continue her work as our interim leader until a permanent successor is elected.

I recommend the party hold a leadership vote as early as possible in the New Year, on approximately the same timelines as in 2003, so that our new leader has ample time to reconsolidate our team, renew our party and our program, and move forward towards the next election.

A few additional thoughts:To other Canadians who are on journeys to defeat cancer and to live their lives, I say this: please don’t be discouraged that my own journey hasn’t gone as well as I had hoped. You must not lose your own hope. Treatments and therapies have never been better in the face of this disease. You have every reason to be optimistic, determined, and focused on the future. My only other advice is to cherish every moment with those you love at every stage of your journey, as I have done this summer.

To the members of my party: we’ve done remarkable things together in the past eight years. It has been a privilege to lead the New Democratic Party and I am most grateful for your confidence, your support, and the endless hours of volunteer commitment you have devoted to our cause. There will be those who will try to persuade you to give up our cause. But that cause is much bigger than any one leader. Answer them by recommitting with energy and determination to our work. Remember our proud history of social justice, universal health care, public pensions and making sure no one is left behind. Let’s continue to move forward. Let’s demonstrate in everything we do in the four years before us that we are ready to serve our beloved Canada as its next government.

To the members of our parliamentary caucus: I have been privileged to work with each and every one of you. Our caucus meetings were always the highlight of my week. It has been my role to ask a great deal from you. And now I am going to do so again. Canadians will be closely watching you in the months to come. Colleagues, I know you will make the tens of thousands of members of our party proud of you by demonstrating the same seamless teamwork and solidarity that has earned us the confidence of millions of Canadians in the recent election.

To my fellow Quebecers: On May 2nd, you made an historic decision. You decided that the way to replace Canada’s Conservative federal government with something better was by working together in partnership with progressive-minded Canadians across the country. You made the right decision then; it is still the right decision today; and it will be the right decision right through to the next election, when we will succeed, together. You have elected a superb team of New Democrats to Parliament. They are going to be doing remarkable things in the years to come to make this country better for us all.

To young Canadians: All my life I have worked to make things better. Hope and optimism have defined my political career, and I continue to be hopeful and optimistic about Canada. Young people have been a great source of inspiration for me. I have met and talked with so many of you about your dreams, your frustrations, and your ideas for change. More and more, you are engaging in politics because you want to change things for the better. Many of you have placed your trust in our party. As my time in political life draws to a close I want to share with you my belief in your power to change this country and this world. There are great challenges before you, from the overwhelming nature of climate change to the unfairness of an economy that excludes so many from our collective wealth, and the changes necessary to build a more inclusive and generous Canada. I believe in you. Your energy, your vision, your passion for justice are exactly what this country needs today. You need to be at the heart of our economy, our political life, and our plans for the present and the future.

And finally, to all Canadians: Canada is a great country, one of the hopes of the world. We can be a better one – a country of greater equality, justice, and opportunity. We can build a prosperous economy and a society that shares its benefits more fairly. We can look after our seniors. We can offer better futures for our children. We can do our part to save the world’s environment. We can restore our good name in the world. We can do all of these things because we finally have a party system at the national level where there are real choices; where your vote matters; where working for change can actually bring about change. In the months and years to come, New Democrats will put a compelling new alternative to you. My colleagues in our party are an impressive, committed team. Give them a careful hearing; consider the alternatives; and consider that we can be a better, fairer, more equal country by working together. Don’t let them tell you it can’t be done.

My friends, love is better than anger. Hope is better than fear. Optimism is better than despair. So let us be loving, hopeful and optimistic. And we’ll change the world.

All my very best,

Jack Layton

I'm very sad to read the news today that Ray Anderson has passed away. If you do not know who he is... was... he was an influential business person who did a lot of good. I was fortunate enough to meet him and his kindness and care were genuine and inspiring. What I really liked about Mr. Anderson was that he was a CEO who spoke to his peers about the influence they have both negative and positive. He fought the good fight from within the system, he reached decision makers like no outside consultant or NGO could. He played a big part in shaping our rapidly changing green building product world, and I am sad to read of his passing. May his passion and legacy inspire all of us to continue!

---This is a repost from July 20th 2011, Kevin summed it all up so well we had to get him up on our blog----

Hello everyone,

City Council has adopted The Way We Green as their strategic longterm plan for the municipality.  Earlier in the morning council voted on whether to allow the public to speak today, and they needed a unanimous vote to approve that.  There were two votes against and so there were no speakers called on outside city administration during the discussion today.  Even so, with 55 business owners and professionals on file in support of The Way We Green [including EcoAmmo], I'm clear that we made a difference in empowering those councillors who were working to get the vote passed.  It also further empowered the administration in their efforts to negotiate with industry representatives expressing concerns.

Going into the 1:30 session, it seemed the council was likely split 6-6 on whether they would vote to approve.  Don Iveson did a masterful job framing the conversation, clarifying what was and wasn't on the table.  In addition, city administrators demonstrated real leadership in presenting their case and request for approval.  Several councillors were very generous in their support of the plan and of the work done by city officials, and pushed for faster adoption, more aggressive goals, and increased action:  Linda Sloan, Karen Leibovici, Ben Henderson, Don Iveson, Kim Krushell, and Amarjeet Sohi.

Thanks to everyone for responding and pledging your support for an important move toward a green future.  Having business come out in support of future-based thinking, strong goals for the environment, and a demonstration that the environment and the economy are parts of the same thing are and will continue to be vitally important.  [Email Kevin to be added to his] distribution list to provide future opportunities to participate for anyone who would like access to future consultation efforts from the City of Edmonton.

Congratulations to everyone on a big win.  Please check your Councillors vote and provide them with feedback. [you can find out who your councillor is here]

Have a great night everyone!

We are very proud of our friend Phil Deeg. He works in the same building where our office is located and looks at the same empty site we do which once was an Esso gas station. Everyone complains about these eye sore sites or other areas of the city that need attention, but it is those rare few who actually do something about them! These folks change the world, and with his proposal to Esso and Alberta Environment, Phil is doing just that. We think his idea is great, while the soils need remediation, that does not mean that a well designed and structurally sound temporary platform could not be built above. This would allow folks to use and enjoy the space while making the site pleasing to look at and be near. Read more about Phil's proposal on the Edmonton Journal website! We are a LEED for Home Provider here in Alberta and one of our first LEED for home projects is actually located in Slave Lake.

We would like to take this moment to share a positive news story - the LEED for Home in Slave Lake was one of the lucky homes and survived the fire! A recent article in the Lakeside Leader told this good news story. Ecological homes is company behind the project and their president Les Hagen believes that "a green home shouldn't put you in the red' and we agree. To read the full article - click here.
